In an exciting turn of events, Tony Stewart is set to make his much-anticipated return to NASCAR, marking his first competition since 2016. He will take the wheel for Kaulig Racing at the season-opening race at Daytona International Raceway next month, where the Ram Truck will make its debut in NASCAR.
Stewart, a legendary figure in the racing world with three NASCAR championships under his belt and a proud member of the Hall of Fame, last participated in a truck race at a national level back in 2005. Currently, he also competes driving for Dodge in the NHRA drag racing series. Joining Kaulig Racing as they reintroduce Ram trucks into the NASCAR scene provides a fantastic opportunity for Stewart to return to the sport he loves.
"I've had the chance to race just about everything with four wheels at Daytona, but I've never driven a truck there," said Stewart in a recent interview. "So, when the opportunity arose to drive the new Ram for its inaugural race back in NASCAR, I jumped at the chance without hesitation."
Stewart's involvement will be part of Ram's innovative "free agent program," which aims to spotlight both established drivers and emerging talents in the field. For the 2026 season, Ram will enter five trucks into the races, featuring full-time drivers like Brenden "Butterbean" Queen, Daniel Dye, and Justin Haley. Additionally, there will be a free agent spot and a unique program called "Race For The Seat," where a reality show-style competition will determine the fourth full-time driver.
Tim Kuniskis, who leads American brands at Stellantis, shared, "We’re not merely returning to the track; we are redefining the game. Bringing Tony aboard as our inaugural Free Agent is sure to create immense excitement, which is precisely why this program was initiated – giving fans the chance to see a beloved driver back in action, now behind the wheel of a Ram truck. This is about celebrating a legacy. Tony embodies grit, determination, and the thrilling spirit of racing – pure adrenaline for the fans."
Stewart’s illustrious career includes being the only driver to clinch all three USAC National championships (Midget, Sprint, Silver Crown) in a single year, 1995. He also secured the IndyCar championship in 1997 and triumphed in NASCAR championships in 2005, 2008, and 2011.
With two victories in his six Truck Series races, the last of which occurred in 2003, Stewart's presence is expected to bring a wave of enthusiasm to the team.
"Having Tony Stewart drive one of our Ram trucks is truly a dream come true," expressed Matt Kaulig, the team owner. "He’s a legend in the sport, and just his name brings a surge of energy. We couldn't be more thrilled to have him on board as we head into Daytona for our inaugural race. This is going to be a thrilling ride to watch!"
Kaulig Racing, which fields two Cup cars, serves as the primary factory team for Ram's return to NASCAR in 2026. Founded in 2016, the team has participated in over 700 NASCAR Xfinity Series races, achieving two regular-season championships and accumulating 27 wins.
After beginning part-time participation in the Cup Series in 2021, the team expanded to a full-time two-car operation in 2022, adding a third part-time entry during the 2023 season. Since their debut in the Cup Series, they have already claimed two wins.
