Rory McIlroy has made a compelling call to his Ryder Cup teammates, Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, urging them to take responsibility for their actions by settling their fines imposed by the DP World Tour. This duo faced penalties for participating in LIV Golf events while still affiliated with the DP World Tour, and although they have appealed these decisions, a resolution is still pending.
This situation is crucial as it affects their eligibility for the upcoming Ryder Cup. Last year, both players showcased exceptional performance under the captaincy of Luke Donald, contributing significantly to Europe's triumphant victory at Bethpage Black. During that event, the united European team expressed a sense of pride, declaring that they would be willing to pay to participate in the Ryder Cup, contrasting with their American counterparts who receive compensation for playing.
Hatton, hailing from England, and Spain's Rahm, who are on the same Legion XIII team, must resolve their appeals favorably to secure spots on the 2027 Ryder Cup team. McIlroy weighed in on the matter during a press conference ahead of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, suggesting that simply paying the fines could streamline their return to the competitive arena. He stated, "Absolutely, yeah," in response to whether it would simplify matters for Rahm and Hatton.
Emphasizing the importance of adhering to the established guidelines, the reigning Masters champion remarked, "We were quite vocal about the Americans receiving payment to participate in the Ryder Cup, while we asserted our willingness to pay to play in these tournaments. These two players can certainly demonstrate that commitment."
Furthermore, McIlroy noted, "Any organization or membership body has the right to enforce its rules and regulations. The DP World Tour is merely upholding its standards. We all commit to these rules each year when we sign a document at the start of the season. Those who chose to join LIV were fully aware of the implications, so I don’t see an issue here."
Despite Brooks Koepka’s recent switch back from the LIV tour to the PGA Tour, McIlroy remains skeptical about any prospects for a unified golfing landscape in the near future. He acknowledged, "That could be one solution. However, I just can’t envision a scenario where that actually takes place at this point. For true reunification to occur, all parties involved will need to feel like they have gained something, rather than feeling like they've lost out. Unfortunately, they seem too far apart for that sort of agreement to materialize."
