His journey is particularly remarkable: he became the first Tamil footballer to score in the EFL earlier this season, a milestone for South Asian representation in football. 'It's mad that I get to play at all three stadiums in just over a year,' he tells BBC Sport. 'People dream about stepping out at Anfield. I was a ball boy there when I was young, so this will be unforgettable.'
But here's where it gets controversial: while both players are eager to prove themselves, their loyalty to Liverpool remains strong. Phillips even jokes about swapping shirts with Curtis Jones, a former schoolmate who unfollowed him on Instagram. 'He must think he's big time now,' Phillips quips. 'But Trent [Alexander-Arnold] still follows me, so I’ll have to have a word with Curtis on the pitch.'
